Initial news from the Argentina camp suggests that West Ham United’s inspirational striker Carlos Tevez has been left out of the team that will face the US in their Group C opener on Thursday.
Tevez played for the reserves against the starting 11 in team training matches and complained about being left out to reporters after the session.
Tevez implied that Argentine manager Alfio Basile will start with Hernan Crespo and Lionel Messi up front. He also seems set to take the brave move of playing two mercurial – or inconsistent – playmakers Juan Sebastian Veron and Juan Roman Riquelme behind them.
The US, meanwhile, will be on a high following their Gold Cup win over arch rivals Mexico. Two second half goals from Landon Donovan and Benny Feilhaber gave the Americans a 2-1 win over Hugo Sanchez’s troubled side.
Argentina (expected): Abbondanzieri; Zanetti, Ayala, Gabriel Milito and Heinze; Verón, Mascherano and Cambiasso; Riquelme; Messi and Crespo.
