Aimar makes case for starting place

Real Zaragoza playmaker Pablo Aimar has left Argentine coach Alfio Basile with a selection headache ahead of Thursday’s debut. Aimar shone for the reserves – outplaying his first team rivals in yesterday’s training match so much so that in the second half Basile swapped him with Cambiasso.

But can he force his way into Thursday’s team? Eyebrows were already raised when it became clear that Basile was planning to start the Copa with both Veron and Riquelme in his side. Could he be thinking of playing an ultra-creative midfield of Mascherano-Veron-Aimar-Riquelme against the USA?

Argentina’s starting eleven based on Monday’s training match:

Carrizo (will be replaced by Abbondanzieri for the debut)
Zanetti, Ayala, Milito and Heinze
Verón, Mascherano and Cambiasso
Riquelme
Messi and Crespo

Aimar replaced Cambiasso at half-time.

  1. Fred

Too many cooks? Mascherano might need a helmet as he’ll be hurling himself all over the place if he’s playing alongside Veron, Aimar and JRR. JRR needs at least 2 players alongside him to win and give him the ball. Not the strongest point of either Veron or Aimar. Might be great to watch though

  2. Juanito

This Argentina side against the Brasil one could be a very interesting match-up with the flair all with Argentina and the grit coming from Brasil.

Robinho is nothing compared to Messi but Alex, Gilberto Silva and Mineiro will have fun taking lumps out of Riquelme if they meet.
