Brazil’s media are close to talking up Mexico into a kind of bogey team for their seleção. The previews of tonight’s game have invariably included footage of Jared Borgetti’s goal in the 1-0 defeat in the Confederations Cup in 2005.
But this is a Mexico close to crisis following their 2-1 loss to bitter rivals USA in the Gold Cup at the weekend. Coach Hugo Sanchez has had to plead for more time and patience from supporters and the media and he will be without several influential players, including Borgetti as well as winger Andres Guardado.
While the ever present and ever cocky striker Cuauhtémoc Blanco has said that the team is ready to put the US defeat behind them and “turn a new page” for Brazil, there is unlikely to be a better time to play the Mexicans.
