A disastrous 5-0 drubbing for Colombia tonight as Bayern Munich striker Roque Santa Cruz bagged the Copa’s first hat-trick, helping Paraguay open their campaign with the tournament’s most emphatic victory so far.
His first goal came just two minutes after Colombia’s Alvaro Dominguez passed a penalty to grateful Paraguayan keeper Justo Villar.
He added two more before substitute Salvador Cabañas scored two late goals to complete a rout against a team that had talked much beforehand about putting the slump of recent years behind them.
Colombia’s next game is against Argentina meaning they face something of a mountain now to qualify. Paraguay face the USA.
