Argentine striker Hernan Crespo has an extra reason to try and get his name on the scoresheet against Colombia tonight. One more goal will take his personal total to 35, one more than legend Diego Maradona.
The Internazionale striker scored numbers 33 and 34 against the United States at the same Pachencho Romero Stadium where he will face Colombia. Crespo was not aware he was closing in on his idol and it was only when he came off the field someone told him his goals had drawn him level with El Diego.
“It makes me very proud to have equalled Maradona,” Crespo said. “It is a great honour for me.”
Crespo’s next task after surpassing Maradona will be even harder. Record Argentine goalscorer Gabriel Batistuta has 56 goals.
