Paraguay beat the USA 3-1 tonight in Hugo Chávez’s home towm of Barinas and now join Mexico in the quarter-finals. The USA are now all but out after two defeats in two games. They had their chances to equalise after Newell’s Old Boy Cardozo put Paraguay 2-1 up 10 minutes into the second half but they were denied by the crossbar and some sharp goalkeeping from Villar in the Paraguay goal as both sides carved out a series of chances in an end-to-end game.
Salvador Cabañas secured the win and Paraguay’s qualification with a sweetly struck free kick right at the death. The goal brings his tally to three all scored after coming off the bench making him the tournament’s supersub and joint top scorer with Robinho and team-mate Roque Santa Cruz.
