Argentina beat Colombia 4-2 tonight in Maracaibo as the Copa favourites booked their place in the quarter finals. The game was another disaster for Colombia who have let in nine goals in their two games and look favourites to be sent straight home with Ecuador and the USA.
After going behind to an early Colombian goal Argentina turned on the style to go in at half-time 3-1 up with Riquelme once again their key man. But Colombia came back at them after half time, scoring and then hitting the crossbar as Argentina were made to sweat in a game that lived up to this Copa’s quickly developing reputation for open, attacking play with plenty of opportunities for both teams.
Riquelme was less influential in the second half than the first while El Pato Abbondanzieri showed some of the nerves that have many Argentina fans questioning his hold on the No. 1 shirt. But the side dug in and grabbed a fourth goal through Diego Milito after Fabian Vargas was sent off for a second brutal challenge late in the game.
Argentina will now play Paraguay with both teams qualified to decide who takes first and second spot in Group C.
