A 0-0 draw between Chile and Mexico was enough to ensure the Chileans joined their opponents in making it through Group B to the quarter finals, most probably as one of the two best third placed teams.
The draw guaranteed Mexico top slot and will play whoever comes off worse from Argentina’s match-up with Paraguay tomorrow. If that ends in a draw then it will be Argentina, whose goal difference is weaker than Paraguay’s.
Tonight’s goalless draw was not as insipid as the one played out last night between Venezuela and Uruguay but it always had the hint of two sides who knew that it would do neither any harm, with Mexico resting several of their stars.
Brazil now play Ecuador and a loss will likely leave them looking at qualifying as the worst of the two third placed teams and a date with Venezuela.
