It had to happen eventually

The Copa registered it’s first 0-0 draw tonight as Venezuela and Uruguay played out a stalemate that suited both teams, being enough to see them into the quarter finals. Spectators were not happy with the poor fare on display and by the second half even the home side were being booed by their own fans. The final whistle saw players embracing in the centre circle as fans rained rubbish down from the stands, which is a little harsh considering the draw secured an historic first group win for Venezuela in the competition

Those of a conspiratorial bent who raised an eyebrow when the historically weak hosts were drawn in the Copa’s easiest group can now dwell on the fact that as Group A winners they will face the weaker of the two third placed teams who will qualify – which could yet be last night’s opponents once again. Or Brazil. Which was unlikely to have been part of CONMEBOL’s thinking.

Group A final table:

Country – Points – Goal Difference

Venezuela – 5 – (+2)

Peru – 4 – (+1)

Uruguay – 4 – (-2)

Bolivia – 2 – (-1)

What a shambles. I’ve never seen so much space and so much bad defending and yet neither team offered the slightest chance of scoring a goal. And Recoba comes on after 70 minutes and tries to conduct the orchestra. What must the “Maestro” Tabarez be thinking??? It’ll take something dramatic to avoid a penalty shootout between these two in the next round.
