It Was 50 Years Ago Today

Today is a remarkable day for Copa America historians.

Exactly 40 years ago today, a kid named Pele made his Copa America debut for Brazil. The 16-year old scored his first goal in a yellow shirt in Brazil’s 2-1 loss to Argentina at the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro.

As if that wasn’t enough, another well-known Brazilian – Ronaldo, no less – made his tournament debut on this day in 1995. The 18-year old replaced Edmundo with six minutes to go in Brazil’s 1-0 win over Ecuador.
