Uruguay have turned their Copa form on their head and after three wretched performances in the group stages have finally showed up. They dominated the first half in the Pueblo Nuevo stadium and could have been several goals clear by half-time.
That they are not is the fault of Diego Forlán. Atlético Madrid were happy to pay 21 million euros for him last week but tonight he has looked like the misfit that Manchester United were happy to see the back of. He missed a hat-trick of chances, including one shocker in front of an open goal that will compete for miss of the tournament. He redeemed himself somewhat with a goal after 38 minutes, latching on to Garcia’s free kick to slot past Vega.
But Uruguay’s lead and Forlán’s relief was short lived. Juan Arango equalised from a free kick two minutes later blasting in from distance and there is likely to be a lively discussion between Uruguayan keeper Carini and what was his sorry excuse for a wall.
Even so Uruguay had looked the better team, having had far more chances. 45 minutes to go.
