Last Night’s Goals

Venezuela 1-4 Uruguay:

Brazil 6-1 Chile:

A whopping 12 goals in last night’s two games which is very promising for the rest of the knock-out phase as the Copa returns to the open, goal-laden, football of the first two rounds of the group stage after the drought of the final three group games.

Unfortunately in too many international tournaments of recent years, sudden death rounds have seen the goals dry up as everyone gets shamefully cautious. Let’s hope this Copa is bucking the trend.

Best goal last night. Well, there were two. The consolation chip from Chile’s Suazo was a gem of pure skill. Earlier Pablo García‘s strike might have lacked the “extreme category” that you can hear Globo’s Bruno Galvão labelling Suazo’s but it came as the second half approached the mid way point, with the game tied, and was the goal that in reality killed off the hosts and confirmed Uruguay’s passage to the semi-final. And what a goal to do it with!
