We’ve already posted about this game here suffice to say Uruguay won a World Cup the hardest way imaginable – against Brazil in the Maracanã, causing one of the biggest upsets in football history.
Guadalajara twenty years later, World Cup semi-final and Uruguay takes the lead. Brazilians wondered if their old bogey team was about to do it again. No chance. Inspired football from Tostão and Pelé leads the greatest team ever to their date with Italy and destiny. Also famous for Rivelino’s angry man celebration after he scores the third goal. Brazil even had the luxury of Pelé conjuring up perhaps the greatest miss ever.
(The 1995 Copa America final starts at 0:40 on this clip.) Uruguay have never lost a World Cup or Copa America game to Brazil in their Centenario stadium in Montevideo. They went behind to the world champions in this Copa final after Túlio looked to have scored with a handball but Bengoechea equalised with a cracking free-kick to take the game to penalties. Túlio then missed his in what may or may not have been a lovely example of footballing karma and Uruguay were champions for the 14th time.
